New Ecco the Dolphin game on the horizon

Yay a new Ecco the Dolphin game is on the way plus remasters of the classic games too ! I recently read a gaming article on Engadget , that the creator of Ecco the dolphin , Ed Annunziata spoke to Xbox Wire and announced a new Ecco game as well as remastering the OG Ecco game and Tides of Time (which I don’t own or have played yet.) I’m pretty excited about the news , as in the article , he stated that the original team that worked on the old Ecco games are returning . I’d also like to talk about the Ecco games that I do have 🐬.

So I actually didn’t own this as a kid , but I would play at friend’s house. But my fiance knew I loved Ecco and saw my Ps2 Defender of the Future game and knew that I would love this.

So I didn’t even own a Sega Genesis either , but when I met my fiance he had a ton of old Sega games and the Genesis and Saturn , but sadly no Ecco. Well no one is perfect , but he’s very close to it, and he found a legit Ecco the dolphin cartridge online. You can tell it’s older and the case is a bit beat up , but that just proves that it’s the real deal.

Ecco in all his glory!

And what is Ecco the dolphin about? Well it’s one of the hardest. Most beautiful games on the Sega, with eerie music, mysterious oceanic atmosphere and the beginning of the game has all your dolphin pod abducted by aliens . Also did I mention it’s hard ? You die so easy, and some of the water puzzles are a bit puzzling to say the least. Also the guy who created Ecco also worked on Chakan The Forever Man . This also a game that my fiance and found online , bought and never beat because it was just too hard . I’ll have to make a post about it sometime as well. But back to Ecco, after it came in the mail last year I plugged in the Sega and attempted to play Ecco .

It’s honestly such a vibey beautiful game .

The music is strange , unique and kind of otherworldly. It really ties into the theme of Ecco as the game always felt mysterious . The oceans in general are very alien and home to so many species of odd undiscovered creatures , and dolphins with their intelligence are kind of close to humans, and add the whole alien eldritch creatures on top of that , why hasn’t more science fiction or fantasy stories been centered on dolphins. I mean there’s a few but quite a bit of those stories are older and out of print . I used to find a few at my old library , I think one even had dolphins astronauts , but I can’t remember what the title of the book was. Oh and Animorphs were always using dolphin forms to fight aliens too . Basically just give me any stories about dolphins and aliens and I’m happy.

Some of the music is even slightly scary

I need to use a capture card to really get more screen shots from the game , but the first area after your dolphin pod , get’s abducted by aliens , you have to go on a mission to save them, you encounter sharks , poison jellyfish, eels and later ( although I never beat the game ) a giant alien queen. Also there’s crystals and something called the Asterite ,an ocean guardian that resembles a DNA , that guides Ecco and gives him advice and basically explains what the invaders in the ocean are.

I honestly didn’t get that far in the game, I did remember some of the plot though from when visit one of my friends who had the game and play at thier house though. We would do the switch on and off method to play through the game. I will eventually come back to this game and play it all the way through. Plus it’s just nice to have a physical copy with the original case .

And yeah there’s a helpful Pteranodon that picks Ecco up

Now on to Ecco:Defender of the Future:

Here’s The first Ecco game that I actually owned! This was a Christmas gift from my sister , as she also loves dolphins and knew I liked playing original Ecco. this was one of my favorite games to play on the PS2 , as it was so different that a lot of the other games that I played at the time. It was 3 dimensional underwater movement, you had to learn special songs , that helped you solve puzzles or talk to marine life. It’s one of the most beautiful games that I’ve ever played on the Ps2 and maybe one of the most visually pretty underwater games. There’s sharks , jellyfish, orcas , turtles , you can actually skip on the surface of the water and leap up in the sky , dive underwater into secret caves . there’s even special dolphin combat . It’s also pretty hard , and you can die fairly easy. I think I got super far ( at least in the middle of the game) with a GameShark . But I still couldn’t finish the game. I did watch a YouTube video that showed the levels and the plot .

Even the booklet and the disc were beautiful.
I will eventually replay this game and do a review .

It’s similar to the first game, there’s a bit of time travel, aliens and alternate time lines . It’s of course the best science fiction , fantasy game ever ! I spent hours playing this game as a teen , although I haven’t attempted a replay yet. but maybe soon ! Also I forgot to mention that this game was originally on the Sega Dreamcast , but was later ported on the Ps2, I never played the Dreamcast version , but this was sort of reboot of the original Ecco the dolphin and the Ecco :Tides of Time ( which is also getting a remaster ).

Also there’s an official Ecco the Dolphin website that has a countdown for when the games come out. I’m not sure which consoles or if they’re coming to Steam , but I’m looking forward to a third Ecco game , plus this would be my first time playing Tides of Time. Let me know in the comments if you ever played any of the Ecco the Dolphin games ? which one was your favorite ? 🌊 🐬

  1. What a blast from the past! When I was a kid in the 90’s/early 00’s there was such a resurgence of dolphin fascination. I remember this game and I always wanted to play it. I watched a friend play it once, but never got to myself. Its really neat to see you got a crack at it!
