ai generated reviews on Sephora and Influenster ? And Ai generated beauty?

Hey everyone ! This isn’t my usual content per se , but I did think it was pretty interesting and a bit dystopian. Recently with AI being the buzzword with Big Tech and Tech Bros , there’s been quite a bit of talk about the ethics of AI and whether it will impact jobs , society and the human arts . I’m no fan of AI taking over the arts , writing and gaming .

I was pretty shocked with how it has infiltrated the reviews and specifically beauty reviews .

Also these are not mine and they’re not even real people , this a picture from Instagram made from AI , but it appeared in my feed due to my interest in makeup . I usually like looking at others makeup and while I like the idea’s shown here , it was probably made and inspired by other makeup artists .
If you’re a long time reader of my blog , you may see many reviews of products that I have been sent by Influenster , a free product app . I basically do surveys and give my reviews and opinions on products that Influenster / brand partners send out to me and talk about them on social media . I’ve been doing this for a few years now , and I have to thank a few of my fellow bloggers for telling me about the program and encouraging me to sign up for the app . And even before Influenster or blogging  I really liked reading reviews , sometimes I’ll watch a YouTube or TikTok on various beauty products , games ect .  I was taken a back when I was reading a perfume review , that there were quite a bit on Influenster that were written by Chat GPT . The flow of the review was very flowery and purple prose-y.  It didn’t seem written by genuine people and almost more like it was written to be an ad. I kept scrolling and found a very similar one as well . And yes incentivized product reviews can definitely be dishonest ( some people are definitely in it for the free product more so than actually giving an honest thoughtful review ). But this really is a a bit much .

How are consumers and people who really want to know how a perfume smells or a foundation works , or eye shadow formula works , supposed to know now that AI reviews is flooding Sephora, Influenster , Ulta and Amazon ? Not only is it unethical , but it’s definitely counterproductive to what these types of reviews are generally for . Yes companies use reviews for hype , but there’s always supposed to be a human voice behind them . Chat GPT is not going to tell you accurately how a purple hair dye is going to work . It doesn’t know anything about hair type , consistency, staying power or scent , or processing time . You need people who’ve actually used the product to get that information. And a bs filled Chat GPT review on perfume is not going to warn you about possible headaches inducing scents , is completely worthless for skin product reviews .
And of course there was the Suva beauty controversy 9 months ago .

Yet more AI generated women , this time advertising Suva’s Beauty water activated liners . This was really a shame as I did see many real people on Instagram create beautiful looks with Suva’s products and was really confused as to why they didn’t just reach out to one of them .

IMG_9084This was probably especially messed up as how are consumers supposed to know how a product works if it’s on a digital model ? Beauty brands have been in trouble before with photoshop and fake lashes in mascara ads. But this is definitely grimy as you have the potential to use real people and only real people can sell makeup .  Same with perfume , hair and skin products .  Also would like to note Suva Beauty did go out of business, I don’t think it was related to the AI controversy but I remember hearing talk about how the computer generated pictures were not helping public opinion on the brand .

Basically I don’t like the idea of AI reviews taking over or even AI in the beauty sphere in general . There’s ton of fuss with companies using fake lashes in mascara ads , and even very prominient Tiktok influensers get into hot water for insane amounts of filter usage and fake lashes for mascara demos. So why shouldn’t AI also be criticized . My other issue is with AI written blogs , and I’m not talking about AI edited but fully AI written blogs that many post and sometimes pop up when you want a recipe or info. This is to me the anithesis of blogging. Many of my fellow bloggers on  WordPress are sharing personal experiences and life stories , or maybe even about topics that they are knowelgable about. I was first made aware of AI written blogs last year when I was reading a reddit post about someone psoting thier exotic bird care blog and noting that they didn’t write any of it, it was AI written and mainly just there for clicks . Indon’t know what to say , but if wanted to read about how to take care of a parrot of cockatoo , I would want to read something written by someone who raised these birds and who was knowledgeable abou them. And then there’s AI written recipes too, which you really should double check some of those as many are not proof read and may contain wrong cooking times of maybe too much or too little of the ingredients.  Bottom line I like reading from people who have lived those experiences ,that actually have the passion or knowledge of their blogging niche .  So before I rant anymore , I wanted to share some makeup ! I tried my best to recreate one of the AI looks from above . I chose this one as I really liked the colors and wanted to use some of my older palettes. I used multiple palettes , Juvia’s Place , Makeup Revolution , and a nyx white liner . I could’ve probably made the lines sharper with actual colored liners or water activated liner but I wanted use what I have rather than go out and buy more products . I’ve been on kind of a low buy thing this year as I really want to use up and enjoy my palettes that are currently in my collection. And just have so many Neon and colorful palettes in general.

IMG_9811It’s not a perfect recreation and I did make a few mistakes but I like it. I didn’t know how to do the blue side so I used my imagination on what I thought made sense .

IMG_7406I’m not perfect , but I can try!

IMG_9796Maybe I should wear mismatched eyes more often .
